Recommended Study & Training Material

As individuals we all come to the table with different life experiences however, no matter what your experience or how good you think you are as a driver, you will need to study the subject of the rules of the road, law, and all other aspects of teaching another, the life skill of driving.

The following titles are recommended or suggested to be used as a reference to ensure that you gain as much information to make sense of the theory questions for example, a question from from the theory resource books could read....

The rules of the road states that ???... you simply read from the four possible options and select your answer, either a} b} c} or d}. Once completed you can check your answer from the answer page at the back of the book, if answered incorrectly, follow up on the topic within the rules of the road or other book. As you may see from this simple example, study, revision time and commitment is required on your part to successfully pass this stage of the ADI exam.

The following recommended or suggested reading is advised however, as all books cross over the three areas of examination, ie, stage 1, 2 and 3, for example a question asked and answered in theory Stage 1 must be implemented in practice in Stage 2 or instructed to a pupil in Stage 3. This can be clearly seen within the theoretical test subject matters as outlined below.


Suggested / Recommended Reading Stage One (Theory)
The stage 1 theory test examines your overall knowledge of the Rules of the Road as well as general road safety and driving instruction matters. You will receive a report on your performance at the end of the theory test.

STAGE ONE  (Theory)
Theoretical Trainee Test Questions based on the following books
  • Stage 1 Resource Workooks
  • The Rules of the Road
  • The Driving Instructors Handbook by Kogan Page
  • Driving the Essential Skills
  • Theory Resource Work Books 1 to 4
  • The Motor Car (Mechanical Principles a Modern Guide)
  • All RSA ADI exam resource material issued by the RSA.
    (much of which is included free within the RSA info pack or downloadable from the  RSA ADI website).

  • Always obtain the most recent publications and be guided by the latest RSA ADI information, recommended reading, including terms and conditions of the RSA ADI unit for your category of test.

    STAGE ONE -
    Theoretical Test Questions based on the following subject matters...
    (Many included within the RSA info pack  see also the ADI RSA website from other downloadable publications)
  • Road safety precepts and practice 
  • The Rules of the Road
  • RSA ADI scheme 
  • Driving techniques and handling the vehicle and its controls
  • Use of correct road procedure
  • Aspects of the law pertaing to driving a vehicle
  • Vulnerable road users
  • Pedagogical techniques and assessment of pupils
  • Dealing with pupils who have learning or language difficulties
  • Dealing with pupils who have physical disabilities and familiarisation with
    common vehicle adaptations
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of the Essential Driver Training (EDT) programme 
  • Correction of pupils driving faults
  • Knowledge of basic mechanics of vehicle and maintenance
  • Driving for life, beyond the practical driving test
  • Scene of accidents
  • Driver testing procedures and documentation including the driving test report form
  • Other matters which as considered appropriate from time to time by the RSA
  • Always read carefully the information pack from the RSA in its entirety.

STAGE TWO  (Own Driving)
The stage 2 ADI driving test assesses your driving ability. Your driving competence will be assessed against a longer, more comprehensive road driving test than that which applies to a learner driver. In order to take the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) stage 2 driving test, you must meet a number of requirements.(see notes from the RSA)

The following publications will assist in raising your own driving standard and overall subject knowledge.

  • The Driving Instructors Handbook - Kogan Page
  • Driving the Essential Skills
  • The Motor Car Mechanical Principles - A modern guide

Suggested Reading Stage Three (Tuition)
The final of the three tests will examine your ability to instruct pupils on how to drive. During this test your examiner will assimilate  two different types of pupils, the first a beginner pupil, the second a novice pupil. The three areas of this test will include
1. Core competencies, 2. Instructional techniques and 3. Instructional characteristics.

Teaching Aids Stage Three (Tuitional)
The use of modern teaching methods and material is of the utmost importance to the impartation of information transfer, as its not the message that's said,  but the message that's received, using a teaching aid is the key... remember if a picture paints a thousand words... along with a good well prepared lesson brief!!!
